Peru Rebels, Police Duel At High Volume

Compiled From Wire Services

Dueling with bullhorns and stereo speakers, rebels and police fought a “battle of the bands” outside the besieged Japanese ambassador’s mansion Tuesday.

The duel of the decibels began Monday when police commandos paraded past the residence while military music blared.

Then, armed with a megaphone, the rebels gathered at a window early Tuesday, singing and shouting “We will overcome!”

But they were drowned out by police, who once again switched on military music at high volume on newly erected speakers ringing the compound wall.
