Jim Schoenfeld, who was fired last week by the Washington Capitals, will become head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, it was reported Sunday.

The Arizona Republic said the 44-year-old Schoenfeld has agreed to a three-year contract worth an estimated $500,000 per season.

Coyotes general manager Bobby Smith refused to return phone calls over the weekend. He said through a team spokesman he would have nothing to say until a coach is announced at a news conference today.

Schoenfeld would be the franchise’s fourth head coach in as many years, following John Paddock, Terry Simpson and Don Hay, who was fired last month after just one season.

According to the Republic, Schoenfeld beat out former St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins coach Brian Sutter.

Schoenfeld has an NHL head-coaching record of 182-180-54 with three teams. He also played defense for 13 years in the league, mostly with the Buffalo Sabres.
