Oakland Plans Twinbill

Brigham Young, California, Indiana and San Francisco will play in the inaugural Pete Newell Challenge in the newly renovated Oakland Coliseum Arena, organizers announced.

The Dec. 22 men’s basketball doubleheader will have Indiana against San Francisco, followed by BYU and California. Newell, who will be honored between games, coached California from 1955-60, leading the Golden Bears to the national championship in 1959 and a runner-up finish in 1960.

The University of Arkansas men’s basketball program and coach Nolan Richardson will find out today about any penalties for NCAA violations.

David Swank, chairman of the NCAA Committee on Infractions, will hold a telephone news conference early this afternoon.

Speculation about the penalties for the program that won the 1994 national championship and returned to the title game the next year has ranged from probation to a postseason ban to a loss of TV revenue to lost scholarships to a slap on the hand.
