About 70 percent of the world’s commercial fish, shrimp and shellfish species are being fished at or beyond their sustainable capacity, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization says.

With the world’s human population at 5.6 billion, the demand for seafood has resulted in a fishing fleet estimated at more than a million vessels - twice as many as existed in 1970.
