Gentlemen Wins Gold Cup

Compiled From Wire Services

Gentlemen, who couldn’t keep pace with Siphon in the Santa Anita Handicap four months ago, overtook his stablemate at the top of the stretch to win the $1 million Hollywood Gold Cup in Inglewood, Calif., by four lengths.

Ridden by Gary Stevens, who recorded his third Gold Cup victory, Gentlemen covered 1-1/4 miles in 1:59-1/5 - a second off the stakes record set by Quack in 1972 - and paid $5.20, $2.60 and $2.10.

Siphon, the 13-10 favorite ridden by David Flores, crossed the finish line four lengths in front of Sandpit and returned $2.60 and $2.10. Second place was worth $200,000, raising Siphon’s career earnings to $2,773,619.

Desert King, winner of the Irish Guineas 2,000 last month, completed a Classic double for Irish trainer Aiden O’Brien by winning the Irish Derby in Dublin, Ireland.

With Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip looking on at Woodbine Racetrack, Awesome Again beat Cryptocloser by 3-1/2 lengths in the 138th running of the $310,000 Queen’s Plate Stakes in Toronto.
