El Nino Keeps Smoke From Amazon Fires Trapped In Brazil

Thick smoke from fires in the Amazon rain forest is choking residents of the region’s largest city.

Visibility is down to 1,600 feet in the Amazonas state capital, Manaus, the newspaper O Estado de Sao Paulo reported Saturday. Doctors, it said, are reporting more and more people in the northern city of 1.1 million are complaining of respiratory ailments.
