Nancy Lopez, enjoying a rebirth in the game she once dominated, shot a 3-under 69 Thursday to share the lead with four others after the first round of the LPGA Tour Championship in Las Vegas.

Lopez was tied with rookie Lisa Hackney, Donna Andrews, Jane Geddes and Juli Inkster in the season-ending event.

Leading money winner Annika Sorenstam and defending champion Karrie Webb were both three shots back after opening with even-par 72s in the elite 72-hole event that pays $160,000 to the winner.

Per-Ulrik Johansson and Joakim Haeggman dominated a field that included three of golf’s major titleholders, combining to shoot 14-under par for a three-stroke lead after the first round of the World Cup of Golf in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The U.S. tandem of Davis Love III and Justin Leonard were in a three-way tie for sixth at 7-under.
