College baseball

The sport was baseball, but the scores had a definite football look Saturday during Day 2 of the Evans, Craven & Lackie College Invitational at August/A.R.T. Stadium at Gonzaga University.

GU bested Oregon State 10-9 to remain the only unbeaten team in the tournament after Washington State outscored Portland 17-11. Both games were called after 7-1/2 innings because of a time limit.

In today’s windup, Portland (0-2) and OSU (1-1) meet at 11 a.m., followed by GU (2-0) and WSU (1-1) at 2:30 p.m.

First baseman Kevin Workman had a two-run double to highlight a three-run seventh that produced the winning margin for GU. In the top of the eighth, Workman had to leave the game with a hyperextended left elbow following a collision at first. He is doubtful for today.

Troy Schrader’s two-run double keyed a four-run OSU eighth. The Beavers left the bases loaded.

Bo Hart had a solo home run and two RBIs and Kevin Taylor a two-run homer for GU.

WSU smashed four of the seven home runs in the first game, three in an 11-run sixth inning that pulled the Cougars from an 11-4 deficit to victory. Shawn Stevenson had a grand slam. Dusty Edler and Jeff Scherer opened the inning with back-to-back homers. Greg Mitchell, who homered in the fifth, also drove in four runs for WSU.

Brook Jacksha had two solo homers for Portland and Jason Vaughn and Tim Friedman had two-run shots.
