With pierced tongues, posses and a fashion rainbow, Manhattan was the Island of Hip on Thursday for the MTV Video Awards. But only the truly hip know much about Jamiroquai, the British band that led with 10 award nominations, winning three awards for “Virtual Insanity.” Above, lead singer Jay Kay makes the scene. Representing the rickety rock establishment, the Rolling Stones, noted band of the ‘60s, and U2, noted band of the ‘80s, showed up to try and create their own ‘90s buzz. So did Elton John, who warned not to expect anything shocking on his new album.
