‘Candle In The Wind’ Tribute Burns Up British Chart

Compiled From Wire Services

After less than 48 hours on sale, Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind ‘97” tribute to Princess Diana shot straight to No. 1 on Sunday’s British singles chart.

Shoppers bought all 600,000 available copies Saturday, setting a new record for the fastest-selling single in Britain.

The song, which Elton John sang during Diana’s Sept. 6 funeral at Westminster Abbey and recorded immediately after, was expected to break sales records worldwide.

The compact disc is selling for $6.40, with all proceeds going to the Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Fund.
