Doctors who examined Pat LaFontaine disagree on whether the Buffalo Sabres captain should resume his hockey career after sustaining a serious concussion.

Sabres general manager Darcy Regier told The Buffalo News in Saturday’s editions that three doctors who work for the team said he should be prevented from playing. Their prognosis differs from LaFontaine’s two neurologists, who told him two weeks ago he was cleared.

LaFontaine has been working out on his own while his teammates get ready for the season. The star center was not invited to training camp because he has not been cleared by the Sabres’ medical staff.

LaFontaine, 32, is scheduled to earn $4.8 million this season. If he is unable to play, an insurance company would pay 80 percent of his salary, and the Sabres would pay the rest.
