The Seattle Mariners activated Russ Davis from the disabled list Friday, a month after he went on it with a severely sprained ankle.

He returned to a new spot in the lineup, hitting third, in time to test himself and show manager Lou Piniella whether he should be included on the postseason roster.

The power Davis adds, usually in the eighth spot, could be a big plus, but how his ankle feels today could determine his status.

“We’ll see how he feels, then we can make a determination on Russ for the postseason,” Piniella said. “Everybody’s basically determined except for Russ Davis.”

If Davis can’t play third, Andy Sheets, who has filled in adequately, will take his spot on the playoff roster. Piniella didn’t expect to announce the roster until Monday.

Piniella plans on playing all of the regular lineup Sunday in the final regular-season game.

“I’d like to get as much of a lineup in as we can,” Piniella said. “Basically, our regulars haven’t been on the field since Tuesday. We don’t want to lose that competitive edge we’d have naturally.”
