The Idaho House wants no part of a law allowing all voters in small, rural precincts to cast their ballots by mail.

On a 34-32 vote on Tuesday, the House killed legislation that would have allowed people in rural precincts with less than 100 registered voters to vote by mail instead of in person.

Sponsor Wendy Jaquet, D-Ketchum, noted that 17 states allow some or all of their balloting by mail. The defeated bill is almost identical to a Utah statute allowing voting by mail in rural remote precincts.
