Reward posted in theft of Munch works
OSLO, Norway – A Norwegian magazine offered a $14,800 reward for the return of two priceless Edvard Munch masterpieces stolen from an Oslo museum over the weekend.
The city-owned Munch Museum reopened Tuesday, two days after three masked robbers, including at least one with a pistol, snatched “The Scream” and “Madonna” and fled in a stolen car as stunned visitors looked on. The museum had alarms, surveillance cameras and unarmed guards, but there was little anyone could do to stop armed robbers.
The weekly magazine Se og Hoer offered the reward for information leading to the return of the paintings. The city said it was too early for it to consider offering a reward.
Many people, including Norway’s Queen Sonja, expressed despair over the theft. The newspaper Dagsavisen carried an angry front page headline demanding: “Bandits. Return ‘The Scream’ and ‘Madonna.’ “
