Ferris’ boys and Mt. Spokane’s girls wrapped up 13-0 championship seasons in Greater Spokane League cross country on Wednesday afternoon.

Peter Hawkins (16 minutes, 11 seconds for 3 miles), Robert Cosby (16:14), Ben Poffenroth (16:16) and Brendan Chestnut (16:17) took the top four spots as Ferris defeated Shadle Park (8-5) and Rogers (0-13) on Rogers’ Seven Mile course. The top seven finishers broke the course record (16:32) set by Mt. Spokane’s Mike Hartanov earlier this fall.

Jill Keller (19:25), Megan O’Reilly (20:02), Shiloh Deitz (20:08) and Jessica Klier (20:13) took spots 2-5 as Mt. Spokane’s girls defeated East Valley (4-9), Clarkston (0-13) and host Cheney (5-8) at Salnave Park. EV’s Jo E. Mayer won in 19:07.

Elsewhere in season-ending boys meets, Steven Gimpel ran a course-record 16:42 for 3 miles at Mirabeau Park to lead second-place Mead (12-1) to wins over Central Valley (5-8) and Lewis and Clark (10-3), which finished in fourth place. CV’s Sean Coyle and LC’s Isaac Harmson finished one second behind. … Luke Graesser (15:48) edged Gonzaga Prep’s Michael Skansgaard (same time) at Plantes Ferry Park to help North Central (11-2) finish in third place. University finished 6-7, West Valley 4-9 and G-Prep 3-10. … Nick Atwood (16:01) topped the field by 20 seconds while guiding East Valley (8-5) past Mt. Spokane (8-5), Cheney (2-11) and Clarkston (1-12) at Salnave. Mt. Spokane’s Mike Hartanov finished second in 16:21.

In girls meets, Whitney Porter (20:06) won by 16 seconds at Mirabeau to give second-place LC (12-1) wins over third-place Mead (11-2) and CV (4-9). Mead’s Katie Compogno placed second. … Ferris (10-3) captured places 3-7, led by Becky Makelprang’s 20:26, to defeat Shadle (8-5) and Rogers (2-11) at Seven Mile. Winner Becca Noble of Rogers ran 19:03 to top the field by 1:04. … Stephanie Whittaker won in 19:35 at Plantes Ferry to give NC (8-5) a win over U-Hi (8-5), G-Prep (5-8) and host WV (1-12). U-Hi’s Karen Owens was runner-up in 19:40, with NC’s Mary Graesser third in 19:59.

Regional meets for 4A and 3A schools are Oct. 30 at a Big Nine Conference site.

Girls soccer

Sarah Dean scored the first goal and assisted on the second as Gonzaga Prep (12-1, 11-1, 33 points) clinched at least a tie for the GSL title with a 2-0 win over visiting Lewis and Clark (8-6, 7-5, 20). Elise Kuhar-Pitters registered her 12th shutout of the season. G-Prep is three points ahead of Mt. Spokane and Mead heading into Friday’s final league match at Mead. LC, which had a five-match winning streak snapped, fell one point behind Central Valley for the sixth and final spot to the District 8 4A playoffs. … Elsewhere, Molly Nordstrom headed in Shayla Roberts’ corner kick at 77 minutes to give CV (10-5, 7-5, 21) a 1-0 win over visiting Ferris (11-2, 10-2, 29), which stands in fourth place. … Katlyn Laughlin gathered in a loose ball, beat a defender and scored in the 54th minute for East Valley’s second goal during a 2-1 win at Cheney (6-8, 4-8). The Knights (7-6, 6-6, 19) clinched the top seed to the 3A district playoffs. … Shaunae Phillipy scored on a penalty kick and Katie Gumke added a goal on a free kick to guide Mt. Spokane (11-2, 10-2, 30) to a 4-1 win at Shadle Park (3-10, 3-9). … Andrea Silver scored the first goal and Andrea Brown capped the scoring as Mead (10-3, 10-2, 30) won its ninth consecutive match, 4-0 over visiting Rogers (0-12, 0-12). … Tonya Schnibbe and Alex Marquard teamed for a pair of goals as fifth-place University (11-3, 9-3, 28) posted a 3-0 win at North Central (7-7, 5-7). … West Valley (5-10, 2-10) won a shootout 7-6 to take a 2-1 win at Clarkston (0-13, 0-12). Lindsay Hood scored in the 44th minute for the 3A playoff-bound Eagles, but she received a red card midway through the second half for a cleats-up slide into the goalkeeper.

Slowpitch softball

Ferris eliminated host Rogers with a 13-2 decision in District 81 playoffs. Ferris took a 9-0 lead with an eight-run third inning. The Saxons will play top-seeded Lewis and Clark at Hart Field this afternoon.
