Hite’s first goal leads Huskies past Gonzaga

The Spokesman-Review

Former University High School standout Brett Hite didn’t waste any time to score his first collegiate goal.

Hite received a long left to right crossing pass from Mike Chabala and scored from the right wing just two minutes, 16 seconds into the match to lead the Washington Huskies to a 3-0 season-opening, non-conference victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs at Gonzaga’s Martin Field.

Washington improved its all-time record against Gonzaga to 18-0-1. The series began in 1981.

The Huskies took a 2-0 halftime lead when C.J. Klaas scored from the left side of the box at the 27:15 mark off a cross from Will Flanagan. The lone goal of the second half came from Spencer Schmidt at 71:18.

Gonzaga played the final 75 minutes of the match a man down after the ejection of sophomore midfielder John Palladino after a hard tackle on Chabala at midfield.

“You can’t play a man down for 75 minutes against that caliber of a team,” Gonzaga coach Einar Thorarinsson said of the 21st-ranked Huskies. “But we couldn’t sustain any attack on offense, either. We didn’t give help support when it was needed on offense.”
