Unitarian Church to host peace celebration

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort Wright Drive, is hosting the Interfaith Council Celebration of Peace 2004 on Tuesday.

Mark Peterson of KXLY will be the master of ceremonies for this dinner and celebration of Egyptian cuisine and international music and dance.

The evening’s cross-cultural entertainment will include KuUmba, a group of young drummers, the Mexican children dancers Ninos por la Paz, youth group dancers Hmong Dynasty, Middle Eastern dancers, Nah’ Joom and more.

International Peace Day was founded in 1981 by the United Nations to give the world some practice at making peace.

The Interfaith Council is a collection of faiths and cultures that has taken on the responsibility of modeling peace in the world and local communities. Faiths and cultures involved include Baha’i, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Native American, Sikh, Sufi, Unitarian, Unity, and many Christian denominations.

The doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the celebration and dinner is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and $40 per couple.

Greek festival

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., is celebrating its 69th annual Greek Festival Sept. 23 through 25 from noon to 8 p.m. each day.

The public is invited to attend icon painting demonstrations, church tours, browse the bookstore, cooking demonstrations and more. Authentic Greek coffee, called “kafeneon,” will be sold, as well as Greek pastries and deli foods. There will be a boutique selling imported items.

Dinners will be served from 4:30 to 8 p.m. every night of the festival. The menu will include beef kapama, manestra with browned butter and myzithra cheese, Greek salad, Greek-style green beans, rolls with butter, coffee and dessert. There will also be a booth with beer and wine.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for children and are available at City Ramp Garage, First and Stevens; G. Arger Co., 300 N. Mullan Road, in Spokane Valley; Spartan Cutlery in the NorthTown Mall; and at the church. Take-out meals will be available.

International speaker

Life strategist Lorna Owens will speak during services on Sunday at the Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St.

Owens is originally from Jamaica and became a lawyer in Miami. When she attended her father’s funeral, she was struck by the number of people whose lives he had touched. She felt compelled to make a difference.

Today her mission is to lead women to success by mastering change.

Services will be held at 9 and 11 a.m., and Owens also will present a workshop, “Reinventing Yourself to Greatness,” from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the church by calling Debbie Cristafir at 489-6964.

50-Plus workshop

WisdomWorks of Coeur d’Alene and the St. Aloysius Faith Formation Office are co-sponsoring a faith workshop for adults 50 or older on Sept. 22 and 29 at O’Malley Hall at St. Aloysius at Boone and Astor.

“Living Fully the Wisdom Years” will present the keys to spiritual vitality and wisdom. Certified senior adult ministers Roberta Lamanna and Rosemary Thielman will speak from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 29.

Tickets are $35 per person or $50 per couple and include the workshop and materials.

Women in Harmony

The Lutheran Women in Harmony is reorganizing and looking for new members.

The new group, Women in Harmony is welcoming women who like to sing to come on the first and third Mondays of the month starting Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the choir room of Central Lutheran Church on Fifth and Bernard.

The group’s repertoire includes popular, sacred and spiritual music.

Public forum

The Northwest Catholic Lay Assembly will present a forum on “Why Married Priests?”

Patrick McCormick, an associate professor of religious studies at Gonzaga University, will speak on the subject Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Providence Auditorium of Sacred Heart Medical Center at Ninth and Rockwood Boulevard.

Banquet and silent auction

Good News Jail and Prison Ministry is hosting its third annual Celebration and Dessert Banquet and Silent Auction.

The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at the Sons of Norway Hall, 6710 N. Country Homes Blvd.

Tickets are $12. The proceeds will go toward the chaplaincy at Geiger Correctional Facility.

Taize prayer service

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., will present a Taize prayer service Sunday at 7 p.m.

Also called Prayer Around the Cross, this worship service originated in the Taize community of France. It is a quiet candlelight service that includes melodic chants, scripture readings, prayers and silent moments of reflection.
