The word “Jap” – which you will see in the World War II-era headlines, news stories and letters in this section – seems jarring to today’s eyes.

The word is now considered derogatory, as most dictionaries will tell you.

The Spokesman-Review retained it in the reprinted news pages and in the letters home from the front for reasons of historical accuracy. They reflect the tenor of those times.
