Businesses present Girls’ Day Out

Merchants in the Garland, Hillyard, North Monroe and South Perry business districts, in partnership with the city of Spokane, present Girls’ Day Out, a shopping event from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Girls’ Day Out, a promotion of Spokane’s neighborhood business districts, is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Northwest Foundation.

Participating retailers will provide special promotions, treats and product demonstrations. Each district also will have local musicians to entertain shoppers.

Five Mile Holiday Lighting Celebration

Because of renovation work at the Five Mile Schoolhouse, the annual community Holiday Lighting Celebration will be held at Five Mile Grange, at Strong and Five Mile roads.

The Grange and the Schoolhouse Preservation Committee invite the community to the celebration from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Santa will arrive just after 4 p.m. Music will be provided by the Goodtimes Barbershop Quartet and the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus.

Refreshments will be available, and contributions of cookies to share are welcomed.

Santa’s Secret Shoppe

COPS Northeast opens its Country Store and Santa’s Secret Shoppe at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St.

It’s a place for kids and parents to do their holiday gift buying and a continental breakfast is available for 50 cents.

Murray speaks on Medicare

Sen. Patty Murray will speak on Medicare Part D from 10:30 to 11:30 today in the Assembly Room of the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St.

A panel will be available to answer questions.

Hillyard’s Holiday celebration

Hillyard’s Holiday celebration takes place Friday and Saturday at Market and Queen in Hillyard.

On Friday, tree lighting is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. At 6:30, winners of the window display contest will be announced, and cookies and cocoa will be served at holiday headquarters.

Doors open at holiday headquarters at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, with craft activities from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Santa arrives at 2 p.m. and is available for photos until 6 p.m. Doors close at 7 p.m.

Meetings

“The Five Mile Prairie Neighborhood Council will meet at 6:30 tonight at the Five Mile Grange, Strong and Five Mile roads.

A representative from city transportation will present the new design plan for Five Mile Road.

A developer will share his design plans for a 16 lot development on the south rim of the prairie.

If anyone has holiday decorations/lights they would like to donate for the Grange’s tree lighting on Sunday, bring them to the meeting.
