GLACIER, Wash. – A 4-year-boy was found dead Tuesday inside a car that had crashed into a tree along the Mount Baker Highway.

His mother was in the car with him. She had cuts on her hands and wrists and an ankle injury.

The dead boy was identified as Sawyer McMurray, and the mother as Genel McMurray, 33. They were still in the overturned car when police found them Tuesday morning near Glacier, about 40 miles east of Bellingham.

“She was distraught, basically saying she had held her dead child in her arms all night,” Sgt. Chris Coglizer of the State Patrol told KOMO-TV. “She had a possible broken ankle and lacerations on her arms and face from the crash.”

Investigators said they wouldn’t speculate about how the boy died.

Bellingham police said family members reported mother and son missing around midnight Monday after they failed to return from a trip to get ice cream.

State Patrol troopers were investigating.

“We don’t know what she was doing up there. We can’t find any reason why she was up there,” Trooper Lance Ramsay said.
