Fire at restaurant spreads next door

Associated Press

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. – Fire destroyed a restaurant and severely damaged another building in Leavenworth early Thursday.

The fire broke out shortly after 4 a.m. inside Echos Bistro on Commercial Street, Mayor Mel Wyles said. The fire then spread to a neighboring building on the corner, a three-story commercial building with retail space on the first floor and six apartments on the top two floors.

The restaurant collapsed and was destroyed, as was the top floor of the neighboring building. The rest of the commercial building suffered smoke and water damage, said Doug Williams, fire information officer.

All the apartment tenants were able to get out and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. There was no estimate on the damages.
