Cardinals 4, Pirates 0: At Pittsburgh, Chris Carpenter limited the Pirates to two hits over eight innings in his third consecutive strong start in St. Louis’ victory over Pittsburgh.

Braves 2, Mets 1: At New York, Tim Hudson took a one-hit shutout into the ninth inning before finishing with a three-hit gem in Atlanta’s victory over the Mets.

Reds 9, Marlins 8: At Cincinnati, the Reds tied it with three runs in the eighth, and Edwin Encarnacion hit a run-scoring double in the ninth for a win over Florida.

Padres 13, Rockies 4: At Denver, Ben Johnson had a career-high four RBIs, leading San Diego to a victory over Colorado.

Phillies 7, Nationals 6 (10): At Philadelphia, Ryan Howard’s RBI single in the 10th inning completed a rally and led the Phillies to a win over Washington.

Brewers 7, Astros 2: At Houston, Andy Pettitte lost to the Brewers for the first time since 1996 in Milwaukee’s victory over the Astros.

Diamondbacks 10, Giants 3: At Phoenix, Jeff DaVanon drove in three runs, and Arizona defeated San Francisco.

Cubs 5, Dodgers 4: At Los Angeles, Ronny Cedeno drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with an eighth-inning single, Ryan Dempster set a club record with his 23rd consecutive save, and Chicago rallied for a victory over Los Angeles.
