It’s the 50th-reunion gathering that’s become an annual party.

And this year, the movers and shakers from Rogers High School’s Class of 1948 have added a twist. They’ve invited their former teacher, Herman Sleizer, 98, who may be the last living instructor from the Class of 1948.

When the proud Pirates went to their 50th reunion in 1998, classmate Leon Horton said, “we had so much fun, we’ve been getting together every year now.” River cruises, train rides and other area attractions have been the backdrops for their parties, drawing about 80 people.

Their former teacher taught history, and coached football and basketball. His students from 1948 are now about 76 years old. Sleizer also was assistant coach at Lewis and Clark and was the first head football coach at Ferris from 1963-67. He taught at Rogers for 30 years.

Rogers Principal Carole Meyer is scheduled to give Sleizer an award and talk about the new Rogers High School. The 18-month construction project began in the spring and entails a major renovation of the three-story school at 1622 W. Wellesley Ave.

“I’m just very pleased,” Sleizer said about the recognition. “I’m just happy to be with them. … I’m not seeking publicity.”
