Supply barely meeting demand

Volunteers spent Monday counting toys and looking over the numbers from last year at the Christmas Bureau.

They already have given away nearly 14,000 toys, and they don’t want to run out. Last year, nearly 16,000 children got Christmas toys from the charity at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center. Bureau organizers say it’s difficult to buy the exact number needed, but they don’t want to overbuy and end up storing the extras.

The bureau will close for the season at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“We still have a good selection of toys, although we had to bring in more toys for the older kids on Saturday afternoon,” said bureau chairman Mike Reilly. The bureau also bought 2,000 more bags of candy since they were getting low Saturday.

On Monday, volunteers distributed food vouchers totaling $19,390 to 691 needy families and gave out toys for 938 children.

Last year, nearly 10,000 families got Christmas fixings during the 11 days the bureau was open. This year, the charity will be open for 12 days.

“We are nearly done serving needy families, but we are only halfway to our financial goal,” Reilly said. Donations to the Christmas Fund pay for the toys and food vouchers. The goal is to raise $485,000. Donations of $22,307, bolstered by a $5,000 gift from Northwest Farm Credit Services, brought the fund to $274,141.17 on Monday.

“Our hope is that the community will respond because we may need to exceed the goal to pay for what we have spent at the bureau,” Reilly said. “We are confident that the fund will meet the goal if the community continues to contribute to the end.”

So far this year, $244,565 worth of food vouchers have been given to 8,383 poor families, thanks to the generosity of the community.

Although the bureau closes Wednesday, the Christmas Fund will continue to take donations through Dec. 28. Donations of all amounts are welcome. Donors and their donations will be published daily. Donors who wish to remain anonymous should indicate their wishes in a note accompanying their check.
