Shaw completes mural; dedication planned

The Spokesman-Review

Shaw Middle School will dedicate a 400-tile mural depicting Hillyard’s history at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday at the school, 4106 N. Cook St.

Shaw’s Art Department and its students began working on the mural in the fall of 2001. The mural will be placed in the school’s main entrance.

The mural will replace a 5-by-18 foot mosaic mural presented to the school in May 1969. Under the direction of their art teachers, the school’s ninth-graders designed it, seventh- and eighth-graders baked the clay tiles and the entire student body financed the project.

The original mural took three years for the students to make and was mounted on the outside of the building. The weather slowly deteriorated the tiles and the mural was dismantled.
