Flick of cigarette leads to arrest

The Spokesman-Review

When driving on a suspended license with methamphetamine in your pickup, it might not be the best idea to toss a lighted cigarette out the window of your car. Especially if it’s in full view of the police.

About 11 p.m. Friday evening, a Spokane Valley Police officer noticed the driver of a Chevy pickup toss a cigarette on the road, then make a right turn without using a signal, said Spokane Valley Police spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan.

The officer pulled over 27-year-old Edward W. Smith, 2907 E. Wabash Ave., and noticed he was shaking and sweating, Reagan said.

The officer discovered Smith’s license was suspended in February and that Smith also had an arrest warrant out.

After arresting Smith, the officer found a small baggie of meth in his front pants pocket. Smith was booked into jail on meth possession charges, as well as the warrant and driving with a suspended license.

Police seek owner of stolen golf clubs

Spokane Valley Police are hoping somebody notices their golf clubs are missing.

A property crimes detective said a set of golf clubs may tie together an investigation into a rash of recent arson and vandalism, said Reagan.

“This one burglary would tie all the crimes and all the suspects together,” said Spokane Valley Police Detective Kirk Keyser. “It’s a very important component of the investigation.”

The clubs were stolen from a garage in south Spokane Valley, Reagan said. The homeowner may not realize the clubs are missing, he said. The clubs include a very distinctive putter, Reagan said.

The suspects in the arsons and vandalism have admitted to the theft but can’t provide the address, Reagan said. The theft would have occurred July 12 or July 14.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Keyser at 477-3325.
