Cougars snap 10-season jinx at Tucson

Brittany Johnson had 12 kills and 10 blocks, and Corina Beyer had 35 assists and 10 digs as Washington State stopped a 10-year losing streak at Tucson, Ariz., defeating the Arizona Wildcats 26-30, 30-22, 30-26, 30-26 Thursday night in a Pac-10 volleyball match.

Washington State moves to 14-8 overall and 2-6 in Pac-10 play. Arizona is 10-10, 1-7.

“Junior All-American Christal Morrison had 18 kills and 13 digs as sixth-ranked Washington swept host Arizona State 30-20, 30-25, 30-24 in Pac-10 play at Tempe.

Courtney Thompson added 53 assists and 16 digs for the Huskies (16-3, 6-2). ASU is 10-9, 2-6.

“Becky Jones finished with 12 kills, but it wasn’t enough offensive punch as San Francisco (18-5, 2-4 West Coast Conference) swept visiting Gonzaga 30-27, 30-18, 30-24 (5-16, 0-6).

“Idaho (6-12, 5-1) ran its West Coast Conference winning streak to four, defeating Utah State 29-31, 30-19, 30-23, 30-19 at Logan, Utah.

The Aggies dropped to 10-13, 3-6.

Women’s soccer

Nanda McCormick scored her third goal in as many matches as Gonzaga defeated San Diego 1-0 in overtime in San Diego.

The Zags improved to 9-6-1 overall and 3-1 in WCC play. The Toreros fell to 9-7, 1-3.

McCormick’s game-winning goal came almost 31/2 minutes into overtime.

“Shaylee Stegen scored off an assist from Molly Neilson in the 89th minute for visiting Weber State as it notched a 1-0 win over Eastern Washington University (5-10-1, 1-4) in the Big Sky Conference.
