Campfires have been banned across the entire Inland Northwest because of the extreme risk of wildfire.

The bans took effect earlier this week and now blanket the region and apply to both public and private lands, including designated campgrounds.

Also outlawed is smoking, except in vehicles. Operating chainsaws or other equipment powered by an internal-combustion engine may only be done under strict conditions.

In North Idaho, no such equipment may be used from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. In the Colville National Forest, the equipment may only be used in an area at least 10 feet in diameter that is cleared of all flammable material.

Anybody traveling on public lands is required to carry an ax, a bucket and a shovel under the restrictions. Pressurized gas stoves and lanterns remain permitted.

Lands within city boundaries are exempt from the restrictions, but most cities across the regions have strict fire bans in place. Contact fire departments for specific information.
