Herbert Hill had 23 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots Thursday night to lead Providence to a 74-59 victory over No. 15 Marquette in the Big East opener for both teams.

Geoff McDermott had 11 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, and Weyinmi Efejuku had 18 points and 10 boards for the Friars (11-3).

Wesley Matthews scored 14 points on 6-for-18 shooting for the Golden Eagles (13-3).

(10) Pittsburgh 74, Syracuse 66: At Syracuse, N.Y., Levance Fields scored a career-high 24 points and the Panthers (13-2) beat the Orange (11-4) in the Big East opener for both.

Eric Devendorf had 17 points and Darryl Watkins added 11 points and eight rebounds for Syracuse.

(22) Memphis 88, Cincinnati 55: At Memphis, Tenn., senior Jeremy Hunt matched his career high with 24 points, to lead the Tigers (11-3) to a victory over the Bearcats (9-5).

Cedric McGowan led Cincinnati with 20 points.

(2) North Carolina 102, Virginia Tech 68: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Ivory Latta scored 24 points while LaToya Pringle added a career-high 22 to lead the Tar Heels (17-0, 2-0) past the Hokies (10-6, 1-1).
