Angels 3, Yankees 1: At New York, Gary Matthews Jr. lined a two-run triple that gave Los Angeles an early lead and Kelvim Escobar held that lead to help the Angels beat the Yankees. Escobar struck out eight. He limited the Yankees to one run and six hits in seven innings.

Indians 6, Tigers 3: At Detroit, David Dellucci’s tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning lifted Cleveland over the Tigers. Victor Martinez also hit a two-run home run and C.C. Sabathia tied for the league lead with his seventh victory. Sabathia allowed three runs and six hits over eight innings.

Orioles 8, Athletics 3: At Baltimore, Brian Roberts had three hits and three RBIs, Miguel Tejada had three hits including a homer, and the Orioles cruised past Oakland. Brian Burres allowed one run and three hits in six innings. The left-hander struck out four and walked three in earning his second major league win.

Blue Jays 9, Twins 8 (13): At Minneapolis, Lyle Overbay drove in four runs, the final one coming on a two-out, two-strike single in the top of the 13th inning that gave Toronto a victory over Minnesota. Toronto’s Alex Rios hit a solo homer in the 11th before the Twins tied it on a Justin Morneau groundout.

Red Sox 7, Rangers 4: At Arlington, Texas, Manny Ramirez keyed a five-run sixth inning with an RBI triple to help Boston beat Texas. Ramirez was 4 for 4 and fell a home run short of the cycle. He also singled in the second, doubled in the seventh and singled in the ninth.

Devil Rays at White Sox, ppd.: At Chicago, Tampa Bay’s game against the White Sox was rained out and rescheduled for Aug. 27.
