U.S. Education Department to meet in Seattle
SEATTLE – The U.S. Department of Education will hold a public hearing in Seattle today to discuss proposed changes to the No Child Left Behind law.
The hearing begins at 9 a.m. at the W Hotel in downtown Seattle. It will be the department’s fourth public hearing since Education Secretary Margaret Spellings announced her proposed changes to the federal regulations.
The changes include a proposal to standardize the way states calculate graduation rates and tutoring provisions for students who are struggling with tougher education standards.
On the eve of the meeting, U.S. Senator Patty Murray expressed concern about the proposal and called on Spellings to heed the advice of educators and parents in Washington state.
