Indians get hits, relief

Spokane wins series opener against S-K

KEIZER, Ore. – Jason Ogata and Aja Barto hit home runs as part of an 11-hit attack and three Spokane relievers cooled off the Volcanoes as the Indians beat Salem-Keizer 9-5 on Monday night.

Starter Braden Tullis went 4 2/3 innings for the Indians and was charged with all five Salem-Keizer runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked two.

Kyle O’Campo (2-2) relieved Tullis in the fifth inning with two on and allowed both inherited runners to score. He lasted two innings and wasn’t charged with a run. Reinier Bermudez replaced O’Campo with two on and two out in the seventh and got out of the jam. Justin King pitched a scoreless ninth.

Spokane opened the scoring on Kyle Rhoad’s RBI triple in the second inning. The Indians added to the lead with Ogata’s solo homer in the third. Spokane took a 3-0 lead in the fourth when Daniel Lima grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, scoring Clark Murphy.

Salem-Keizer scored in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-1, but the Indians answered with a three-run fifth. Murphy’s sacrifice fly drove in Ogata, and Denny Duron followed with a two-run double for a 6-1 lead.

The comfortable lead didn’t last long, though, as the Volcanoes scored four times in the bottom half of the inning to make it 6-5.

Spokane got some insurance in the late innings. Miguel Velazquez led off the seventh with a walk, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Tommy Mendonca then drove in Velazquez with a sacrifice fly. Barto had a two-run blast in the ninth.

The second game of the five-game series is tonight at 6:35.
