Roundup: WSU’s Abbott brings home bronze in 800M

Washington State’s Joe Abbott won the bronze medal in the men’s 800 meters at the Pan American Athletics Championship last weekend in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Another Cougar sophomore, Courtney Kirkwood, took seventh place in the women’s javelin.

Abbott, from Reno, Nev., took third place with a 1 minute, 48.99 second showing Sunday, nine-tenths of a second behind the first-place time.

Kirkwood, from Othello, unleashed a throw of 136 feet, 7 inches on her fifth attempt, good for seventh place.

College golf

WSU sophomore Kristen Allard won the Collegiate Players Tour/Pinetree Collegiate Open last week at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Ga.

The Porterville, Calif., native finished with an 11-over 227 on the par-72 course to win by six strokes. Her second-round 2-over 74 tied for lowest round of the tournament.

College soccer

Gonzaga’s men’s soccer team tied for third place in the West Coast Conference preseason poll. Forward Tye Perdido and defender Nick Barclay were named to the preseason All-WCC team.
