MOSCOW, Idaho — The Moscow City Council has voted down an attempt to amend the city’s nondiscrimination policy to cover transgendered people. The council voted 5-1 to change the city’s employment policy to ban discrimination based on gender expressions or identity. City leaders say the extra protection is unnecessary under the existing policy. Council member John Weber, who voted to kill the resolution, says equal employment opportunities are already extended to all people. The vote was preceded by testimony from supporters of the resolution, who say the amendment would reaffirm Moscow as an inclusive community that doesn’t tolerate any form of discrimination. The amendment was supported by the city’s mayor and human rights commission.
