Ferris rallies to win in Calif.

The Ferris Saxons rallied from a 21-point first-half deficit to defeat the Esperanza Aztecs 41-35 Friday night in Valencia, Calif.

Connor Halliday completed 28 of 51 pass attempts for 420 yards and five touchdowns with three scoring throws going to Jason Bates. Two of those throws to Bates included two inside screens that, along with a two-point conversion (another Halliday to Bates pass), provided a 9-yard game-tying touchdown with 3:22 left in the fourth quarter and the winning score from 15 yards out in OT.

Following the tying touchdown pass to Bates, the Aztecs drove down the field, but missed a 47-year field-goal attempt with 2 seconds remaining. The Aztecs had the ball first in the overtime, but the Ferris defense held with lineman Peter Anderson blocking a field-goal attempt.

Bates finished with 153 yards on 10 catches and Beau Bozett collected 142 yards and a TD on eight catches.

Esperanza had rolled to a 28-7 lead in the first half behind 247 yards on the ground that included three rushing touchdowns.

A 12-yard Halliday-to-Bates TD pass was the first of three unanswered scores in the third quarter for the Saxons. Anderson stripped the ball from a running back and ran in 30 yards for a score, and then Bozett combined with Halliday for an 80-yard score that pull Ferris within one after the PAT kick failed.

Esperanza came back with a TD run with 8:40 left in the game to lead 35-27.
