Women’s basketball: Connecticut picked up right where it left off last season: unanimous No. 1 in the women’s basketball poll.

The Huskies received all 40 first-place votes Friday from a national media panel. It’s the seventh time in school history Connecticut has held the top preseason ranking by the Associated Press. UConn also was the unanimous choice atop the poll the final 15 weeks last season.

Stanford was voted second. Ohio State was third, with Notre Dame and North Carolina rounding out the first five. The Gonzaga women made the “also receiving votes” list with 30.

UConn won its sixth national championship last season to cap a 39-0 record. Huskies coach Geno Auriemma returns four starters, including Player of the Year Maya Moore (above).

New Zags show starts Sunday

College basketball: The Mark Few TV Show will debut on KHQ-TV at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The new 30-minute show will be hosted by Greg Heister. It will normally air after the Sunday Night Football game on NBC. It will also be aired weekly Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on FSN.

KGA Sports Talk (1510-AM) will continue to host the 1-hour Mark Few Radio Show at noon Mondays starting Nov. 9. Tom Hudson, the radio voice of the Zags, will host the show.

The one-hour GU Coaches Show, also hosted by Hudson, will air on KGA Tuesdays at 7 p.m. beginning Nov. 10, with the exception of Nov. 17 and Nov. 24. The show will originate from Tomato Street restaurant in Spokane.

For the first time, Gonzaga women’s basketball home and away regular-season games will be aired on KEYF 1050-AM. Steve Myklebust returns for his sixth season calling the action.
