Whits’ Mangis wins again

Jessica Mangis earned her fourth straight victory as Whitworth beat Puget Sound 4-3 Friday in the opening game of a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader in Spokane.

Game 2 was suspended because of rain in the top of the seventh inning and the Loggers (5-20, 3-10) leading 13-9.

The teams will attempt to complete the second game today at noon.

Mangis (5-3) went the distance for the third straight game for the Pirates (10-10, 4-8). She allowed three runs on four hits, striking out five.

•North Idaho College split a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader with Snow College (9-20, 6-15) in Ephraim, Utah, losing 8-0 in the first game and winning the second game 15-13 in nine innings.

The Cardinals (22-20, 15-15) managed only one hit in the opener, then pounded out 16 in the second game. Lauren Maloney went 4 for 6 with five RBIs and Shelby Gonzales was 2 for 4 with three RBIs in the second game.

•Community Colleges of Spokane’s doubleheader at Wenatchee Valley was postponed because of weather and rescheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Baseball

The opener of a Northwest Conference series between Whitworth and George Fox in Spokane was suspended by rain after seven innings.

The Bruins hold a 16-5 lead over the Pirates (8-15, 5-4). The teams will attempt to complete the game today at 11 a.m.

•Washington State’s game against Washington in Seattle was rained out. The Cougars and Huskies are scheduled to play a doubleheader today beginning at noon.

Track and field

Washington State’s Matt Lamb finished fifth in the discus at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, with a throw of 185 feet, 3 inches.

Holly Parent tied for fifth in the high jump, clearing 5-7¼.

•Community Colleges of Spokane competed at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore.

In the men’s 3,000 steeplechase, the Sasquatch had two top-10 finishes – Trevin Goodrick finished fifth in 9:46.41, and Nick Wilson finished ninth in 9:58.28.

In the men’s 5,000 meters, CCS’ Andrew Cesal finished sixth in 15:33.05.

Rowing

Gonzaga’s Varsity 8+ finished second and the Bulldogs’ other boats finished third racing against Michigan State and Buffalo in Ithaca, N.Y. The Varsity 8+ finished in 6:24.2 – 9 seconds behind the Spartans, who won all four races.
