Kashif Ravasia, a freshman at St. George’s School, proved his math smarts in the Math is Cool Championships in early December when he placed first in the individual geometry test.

According to St. George’s, Ravasia’s score helped the school’s freshman/sophomore team finish in eighth place overall in the Division I large school competition. Team members include Myra Ahmad, Justin Heftel and Sarah Wagstaff.

The junior/senior team participated in the Division I Elite competition for the first time, finishing in seventh place overall. Junior Brent Li was awarded fourth place in the state competition in the individual pre-calculus test. Other junior/senior team members include Jasper Danielson, Christine Go and Jordon Newton.

Kenneth Day, of St. George’s eighth-grade team, received eleventh place overall in the individual Algebra test. His teammates include Mikey Nord, Anoushka Mullasseril and Joseph Verchota.

The seventh-grade team was awarded fourth place overall in the Division I large school competition. The seventh-grade team includes Michael Thew, Collin Cremers, Jehan Ravasia and Jimmy Psomas.

Tree recycling

It’s time to put away the Christmas decorations and take down the tree. And the students and parents of the Ferris High School class of 2011 will hold a Christmas tree recycling fundraiser on Saturday and Sunday, and Jan. 8 and 9. The fundraiser will benefit the students’ Senior All-Nighter.

Each weekend, Ferris seniors and their parents will be at the school parking lot, on the corner of 37th Avenue and Regal Street, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., accepting Christmas trees for recycling. A minimum $5 donation for drop-off is suggested. Tree pick-up service is also available for a $12 donation or $10 for senior citizens.

Mead bond meetings

The Mead School District will hold a series of community bond presentations during January on the Facilities Improvement Bond. Residents are being asked to approve the bond on Feb. 8.

Meetings will be held at Shiloh Hills Elementary School, 505 E. Stonewall Ave., on Jan. 12; at Northwood Middle School, 13120 N. Pittsburg St., on Jan. 18; and at Midway Elementary School, 821 E. Midway Road in Colbert, on Jan. 25. All meetings will be held at 7 p.m. in the school libraries.
