Police: Driver reached 100 mph before 3-vehicle crash

A fleeing driver going an estimated 100 mph on East Sprague Avenue was involved in a three-vehicle crash at Fancher Road shortly after a police officer suspended pursuit Thursday night. Penny R. Harrison, 43, was treated at a hospital and then arrested on a charge of vehicular assault, police said. She was not cooperative with police or medics, officers said. Her passenger, Antonio M. Mitchell, 32, was also to be held on a felony arrest warrant for possession of a controlled substance. Mitchell was hurt badly enough to be hospitalized overnight, police said. One of the other drivers was initially unconscious and was taken to a local hospital where she was in stable condition later. A third driver had minor injuries and was not taken to a hospital. The incident began about 10:30 p.m. when an officer tried to stop Harrison in a black Pontiac Grand Am that was speeding eastbound on Sprague at Altamont Street at an estimated 60 mph. The officer did not chase the driver after the car accelerated to 100 mph. The officer followed the driver’s path and saw the collision at Fancher from a distance, police said.
