Rape suspect arrested in downtown Spokane

A Spokane man was arrested on suspicion of rape Tuesday after a woman said she was attacked in an abandoned house in the 1100 block of West Fifth Avenue. Kelvin D. McCauley, 43, was arrested near Third Avenue and Monroe Street after a woman ran down the street about 6 p.m. screaming she’d been raped and citizens called police, according to a news release. The woman had broken ribs and a broken wrist, but police aren’t sure if the injuries came from an assault or from a fall from the second-floor window of the home, which she said she’d jumped out of to escape, police said. The woman was taken to a hospital. McCauley was booked into Spokane County Jail on charges of second-degree rape and first-degree burglary. His criminal record includes convictions for theft, escape and money laundering. He was convicted of misdemeanor theft in March and sentenced to 90 days in jail, records show.
