Spokane event to honor Native American vets

From Staff Reports

Tribal members will honor Native American veterans during daylong ceremonies on Saturday at the Spokane Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The first Native American Memorial Ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. and continue throughout the day as separate ceremonies are conducted by members of several tribes, including Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Nez Perce, Yakama, Kootenai and Kalispel.

The event will be attended by Spokane Mayor Mary Verner, City Council President Joe Shogan and Spokane VA director Sandy J. Nielsen.

Native Americans serve in the military at more than twice the rate of any other ethnic group, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

All veterans and their families are invited to attend.
