After reading your May 22 column (“Give me Liberty”) extolling the virtues of the renovated Spokane County Liberty Lake golf course, I was very interested in seeing what had been accomplished for $4.5 million (or $6 million if you read the golf course website).

And it looks very nice.

But since I had just hiked the Liberty Creek trail up to the waterfalls, I couldn’t help but compare the two recreational areas.

The golf course has undulating greens that will challenge golfers with nuances – I envisioned those golf balls making their nuanced ways to the cup – and I compared the greens to the 2.5-foot log that has laid for 2 years now across one of the Liberty Creek trail switchbacks, causing a wide swath of new erosion as hikers have to cut straight up the hill instead of using the blocked trail.

But I was most impressed by the new restroom added at the farthest point from the clubhouse, up on one of the new hills built to improve the course, a facility that ensures golfers won’t have to wait to get back to the golf club. And I compared that restroom to the outhouse at the Liberty Lake ORV area, an outhouse that was slated to be closed until Spokane County Parks and Recreation decided that was a crappy way to save money.

I have an expression to describe the course: “Boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.”

Now that Spokane County has three beautiful golf courses and one racetrack I can understand why my property taxes are so high.
