Blaze likely started in basement

No one was hurt in a Thursday afternoon fire that appears to have begun in the basement of a Spokane Valley home. Flames and heavy smoke were visible when Spokane Valley firefighters responded to the 1:51 p.m. call in the 10600 block of East Eighth Avenue. No one was at home when the fire broke out, said Cooper Kennett, battalion chief at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
