Carpenter sparks Zags

Ryan Carpenter pitched a complete-game three-hitter and struck out 11 to lead Gonzaga to a 5-2 victory over Saint Mary’s at Patterson Baseball Complex on Thursday.

Steven Halcomb singled to lead off the third and fifth innings for Gonzaga. He came around to score both times as the Bulldogs scored twice in both innings. Billy Moon drove in two runs for Gonzaga (22-11-1, 6-1 WCC).

Mark Anderson pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs for Saint Mary’s (15-17, 3-4).

• Oregon State (28-7, 9-1 Pac-10) scored three runs in the seventh inning and held on to defeat Washington State 4-2 in Corvallis, Ore.

Derek Jones hit a solo home run in the fourth and scored on an error in the ninth for Washington State (14-18, 2-11).

• Andrew Triggs outdueled Geoff Brown and Southern California defeated Washington 2-1 in a Pac-10 game at Seattle.

Trigg pitched a complete-game five-hitter for USC (17-20, 7-6). Brown went eight innings and allowed six hits for the Huskies (11-24, 2-8).

Softball

Donna Kerr pitched a one-hitter to lead UCLA (30-9, 6-4 Pac-10) to a 4-0 victory over Washington in Los Angeles.

Jenn Salling singled leading off the seventh for the only hit by the Huskies (30-7, 5-5).

Tennis

The Gonzaga men and women lost their opening matches at the West Coast Conference Championships in San Diego.

The fifth-seeded Gonzaga women lost to No. 4 seed Santa Clara 4-1. Gonzaga won the doubles point as Rika Mehndiratta and Danielle Farmer won their match 8-3 and Clare Dodge and Kristina Zauere won their match 9-8. Gonzaga plays San Francisco in a consolation match today.

The seventh-seeded Gonzaga men lost to Santa Clara 4-0 and will play Portland today.

Swimming

Nine-year Washington State swimming coach Erica Quam has announced her retirement in order to pursue personal and other professional opportunities in Bellingham, Wash.

During her stay at WSU, the Cougars set 19 school records and established nearly 100 spots on WSU all-time top 10 lists.
