Football: Hall of Fame fullback Joe Perry, the first player with back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons and nicknamed “The Jet” for his speed, has died. He was 84.

The San Francisco 49ers, with whom Perry played 14 of his 16 NFL seasons, said he died Monday in Arizona of complications from dementia.

Perry, a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1969. His other two seasons were with the Baltimore Colts.

Perry still stands as San Francisco’s all-time leader in yards rushing (7,344) and touchdowns rushing (50). He led the 49ers in rushing on eight occasions, including seven consecutive seasons from 1949-1955.

U.S. women beat Canada for title

Hockey: The United States has won its third straight women’s world championship, beating Canada 3-2 in overtime Monday in Zurich.

Hilary Knight scored the winner 7:48 into the extra period, her fifth goal of the tournament.

Canada forced OT on Rebecca Johnston’s power play-goal with less than four minutes left in the third period.

Jocelyne Lamoureux and captain Jenny Potter also scored for the U.S. Gillian Apps scored Canada’s other goal.

Gray sits out, delays return

Rodeo: Cheney bareback rider Ryan Gray delayed his return to action from a rib injury by a week, passing on rides at the Buc Days Rodeo in Corpus Christi, Texas, and the Clovis (Calif.) Rodeo during the weekend.

The six-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier, who was leading the standings last year when he suffered a lacerated kidney in the second round of the NFR, now plans to make his return this week at Lufkin, Texas.
