Ryan Carpenter and Royce Bolinger collected significant firsts to lead Gonzaga University to a 9-1 win over Iowa in the Irish Baseball Classic in San Antonio on Friday.

Carpenter (1-1) limited the Hawkeyes to two hits in six innings, striking out eight, to earn his first win. Three relievers held Iowa hitless the last three innings.

Bolinger’s first home run of the season, a solo shot, highlighted a 14-hit attack for the Bulldogs (8-7), who got two hits each from seven players. Bolinger also drove in a run in the third inning with a single.

Steve Holcomb and Billy Moon also had two RBIs.

Fresno State (12-2), ranked 17th in the country, had a six-run third inning, highlighted by a school-record three consecutive home runs. The Bulldogs tacked on five in the bottom of the sixth for the 15-run lead when rain came and forced a suspension.

It will be completed today at 4:30 p.m. before a regularly scheduled game.

Swimming

Idaho freshman Shana Lim, experiencing what Vandals coach Tom Jager labeled “big-meet jitters,” had to settle for 37th in the 100-yard backstroke at the NCAA Division I championships at Austin, Texas. Lim was timed in 54.07 seconds, off her school-record and personal-best 53.0.

She is in the 200 backstroke today.
