OKLAHOMA CITY – A 5.6 magnitude earthquake rocked central Oklahoma late Saturday, rattling buildings across a wide area and a stadium where a football game had just concluded, but authorities said they had no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.

The quake was a latest in a series of quakes to hit the state in a 24-hour period, including a 4.7-magnitude quake early Saturday.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported from Golden, Colo., on its website that it monitored a 5.6 magnitude quake at 10:53 p.m. local time Saturday and said it was centered about 44 miles east-northeast of Oklahoma City.

If the initial reading of 5.6 magnitude holds, the quake would be the state’s strongest on record.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck El Reno, just west of Oklahoma City, in 1952 and another of about that magnitude struck in northeastern Indian Territory in 1882, according to USGS records.
