For ghosts and goblins preparing for the upcoming spooky holiday, Cataldo Catholic School is hosting its annual Halloween costume sale next Thursday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The sale will be in the parking lot of the school, 455 W. 18th Ave.

Donations will be accepted.

Students named Merit semifinalists

Three Gonzaga Prep students and one from St. George’s School are 2012 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

They are Caitlyn Ewers, Matthew Gillum and Phillip Yan, all of G-Prep, and Jasper Danielson, of St. George’s.

Semifinalists have an opportunity to compete for 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth $34 million that will be offered next spring.

The following G-Prep seniors were named Commended Students: Tessa Anton, Aaron Burns, Michael Dumais, Anthony Gill, Ann Goodrich, Alexandra Kraft, Molly Moloney, Cory Sago, Renee Shull, Katherine Spilker and Roy Taylor.

Jack McGougan, Kellen Mohr, Gabrielle Peterson and Ajay Vishwanath, all of St. George’s, were named Commended Students. McGougan also received Honorable Mention in the National Hispanic Recognition Program. The award is based on his PSAT score, which placed him in the top 2 percent of all students took the test and are at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino.

Northwood teacher wins STCU grant

Spokane Teachers Credit Union recently awarded Kyle Smith, a life skills teacher at Northwood Junior High School in the Mead School District, with a $500 classroom grant.

Three other teachers in school districts in North Idaho and Spokane Valley were also awarded the grant, selected by a drawing at STCU.

District will produce ‘School Talk’ shows

Spokane Public Schools will produce three new education-related shows each month, which are now available online and on television.

The “School Talk” shows will run on Comcast Cable channel 17 at 7 and 11 a.m., and 3, 7 and 11 p.m. each day. They will also be posted on the district’s website at www.spokaneschools.org.

The shows will cover topics such as mathematics, middle school changes and volunteer opportunities.
