Once again, Shadle Park High School’s annual boys basketball alumni game, set for Saturday at the school from 10 a.m. to noon, will benefit the Rypien Foundation.

Shadle boys coach Tim Gaebe said the goal is to raise $5,000, utilizing individual and business donations.

Former Shadle Park three-sport standout Mark Rypien, the Super Bowl XXVI MVP, created the foundation in 2004 in memory of his son, Andrew, who died of cancer at age 3.

The foundation helps local families who are battling childhood cancer.

Snowboarding

Nate Holland, a Sandpoint native who now lists Squaw Valley, Calif., as home, and teammate Hagen Kearney of Telluride, Colo., stuck together for an impressive win at the FIS World Cup team snowboardcross race last weekend in Montafon, Austria.

U.S. Snowbording reported it was a tight race the entire way through adverse weather conditions.

The U.S. team is competing in the first stateside FIS World Cup, the USANA Snowboardcross Cup at Telluride, this weekend.

“It was awesome. I always enjoy team races,” Holland was quoted as saying, noting he was pleased to get the win after not racing well the first day.

“I like races in Austria,” he added. “The fans are great and fired up.”

• Gonzaga baseball: Brandon Bailey, Broomfield, Colo., 5-foot-10 right-handed pitcher, went 11-0 with 1.02 ERA as his school won the Colorado 4A state championship; Jack Morello, Sherman Oaks, Calif., 6-2 right-handed pitcher, struck out 45 in 37 innings.

• Idaho volleyball: Samantha Rouleau, Eugene, 5-foot-6 defensive specialist/setter, four-time all-league and second-team all-state; Torrin Crawford, Walla Walla, 6-1 middle blocker, multiple-time all-league.

• Gonzaga women’s crew: Hannah Brown, Vienna, Va., 5-foot-7; Briana Ledoux, Holy Names Academy, Seattle, 5-6; Clare Manthey, Jesuit High School, Portland, 5-10; and Meghan McCallum, Mount Si High School, Snoqualmie, Wash., 5-10.
