Jack Machtolf went 4 for 4 from the plate and drove in two runs and Gonzaga Prep routed Kennewick 9-1 in the opening round of the AA American Legion state baseball tournament Saturday in Anacortes, Wash.

Gabriel Renouard had two hits and two RBIs and Mason Kuebler had two hits and scored twice for Gonzaga Prep, which put up four runs in the third inning to take control.

Gonzaga Prep takes on Ferndale today.

Ferndale blanked Olympia 5-0 on Saturday.

University and Mead both fell in their opening-round games.

Daniel Lake scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh, giving Walla Walla a 5-4 win over University.

Mead went hitless in a 10-1 loss to Hanford.

University will play Montesano and Mead will play Lynden today. Both games are loser-out.

State AAA

Despite a demanding effort from starter David Machtolf, the Spokane Bandits fell 7-5 to Lakeside at the AAA American Legion state tournament at Carlon Park in Selah, Wash.

Machtolf pitched all eight innings, giving up six earned runs and striking out eight batters. He threw 157 total pitches.

Anthony Gosline drove in two runs for the Bandits, who will play Hanford in a loser-out game today.
